Supporting Reading in KS2 for TAs
Focus: Curriculum
For: Teaching assistants
Description:
This session is suitable for TAs working in KS2. The session would also be suitable for volunteer readers who regularly support pupils’ reading.
Please note: KS2 TAs or volunteer readers who are supporting pupils to learn and apply KS1 reading objectives may find it helpful to attend the Supporting Reading in KS1 workshop on 19 September 2023
Join this interactive, online workshop specifically designed to support TAs in their work with pupils.
This session aims to develop Teaching Assistants’ practice in their work to support pupils to develop Key Stage 2 reading skills and strategies. The elements of reading – word reading, fluency and comprehension – will be explained and TAs will have the opportunity to explore a variety of practical, proven approaches for supporting pupils, including for those pupils who struggle with reading, in developing their strategies and skills across the elements.
Participants will:
- develop an understanding of the elements of reading
- consider the range of approaches to support reading and how they can be used effectively to meet learners’ needs
- discuss the use of quality, focused questioning and feedback in reading
- acquire practical ideas for use back in school
Director’s Note:
Support your KS2 TAs to do their very best for your pupils. Get all KS2 TAs booked on to ensure consistency. Think about which KS2 TAs would benefit from the KS1 reading session on 19 September (depending on pupil ability – are they working at KS1? Do your TAs have that KS1 knowledge?)
