Reading – A Whole School Approach to Comprehension

Focus: Curriculum
For: English subject lead teachers, deputy/assistant heads, reading leaders

Description:

Gaining Consistency – securing a ‘top-level’ view of English across the school.

The EEF reports that teaching reading comprehension strategies across the school is highly effective and can deliver an additional six months’ progress but qualifies that, for this to be effective, strategies must be taught explicitly and consistently.

This online session will consider and explore:

  • the key reading comprehension strategies that are introduced through the National Curriculum programmes of study
  • how schools can build a reading curriculum that provides progression in these strategies
  • effective and consistent teaching and learning approaches to ensure maximum impact on pupils’ reading
  • how to develop a shared understanding of reading comprehension across your school
  • how to create rich experiences for children to think deeply about high-quality texts

Each session will focus on a different aspect of English, meaning that schools can take part in all sessions or choose those that are most relevant to their school development priorities.

Multiple Sessions:

This is a series of four sessions. Each session will be stand alone, therefore it is advisable but not essential for staff to attend all sessions.

  • [1] Tue 10 October 2023
  • [2] Tue 7 November 2023
  • [3] Wed 7 February 2024
  • [4] Wed 7 March 2024

Please note: You will need to book each of these sessions individually.

Director’s Note:

Feedback from school leaders has shown concerns with consistency across classes, support for middle leaders in school, alongside problems now surfacing about gaps in pupil knowledge as a result of lockdown. It’s all here for you – get your English leader booked on.
